Michel Soucy Presents Snowy Owls

February 19th, 2012 - Kingston, ON

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a carnivore, generally found in the northern polar (north of latitude 60 degrees north) areas during the summer season. The snowy migrates south from the Arctic tundra in search of prey, and can breed in more southern latitudes.

This owl nests on the ground, on a scrape which it builds on top of a mound dirt, rocks or grass. An area which provides good visibility, quick access to hunting terrain, with as little snow as possible, will ensure easy access to food.

Breeding is during the month of May. Depending on the availability of prey available, clutch sizes can be from 3 to 12 eggs, which are laid one at a time, taking several days total. Hatchings will happen roughly five weeks after laying, and both parents will care for the young.

It's main food consists of lemmings (up to 1500 in one year), but will also eat small rabbits, squirrels, rodents, birds and fish.

It's body length can be up to 28" tall with a wingspan of almost 5 feet.

A stunning bird for sure!
